Digital Teens
Yesterday I was doing a little Sunday afternoon reading (while watching select parts of Spiderman with the kids) when I came across these stats from a blog I read.
According to a recent survey conducted by TeenSpot, what teenagers want for Christmas this year are:
GUYS
- PlayStation 3
- iPod
- Xbox 360
- Nintendo Wii
GIRLS
- iPod
- Cell Phone
- Laptop
- Digital Camera
TeenSpot notes that after wanting iPods, girls’ gifts appear to be more communicative and creative, while guys just want to have fun, with 3 out of 4 of their items being videogame systems.
When I read articles and see trends like this, outside the obvious fad pressure that comes with teenage consumer desires, I think there is something that is significant if we are looking at ministering to the next generation. I think that often we mistake the tool for the treasure. No question that ministry has to go digital, but that is just the tool, not the real treasure.
For example, take a look at the items for a moment and what do you see beyond technology? A desire for adventure, the power of music, or the heart to reach out or capture moments. I think those are all things we can do within the context of ministry on a weekly basis, if not at varying scales over the course of a year.
We have the tools, now do we have the creativity and passion to work through the growing pains of prototyping services until we unlock the treasure? I think the emergence of generations depends on it.

Amen.
Whatever it takes to see them in Heaven forever, eh!
Peace and blessings in Jesus' mighty name I pray:
Donna
